Setting Up Your Homepage

One of the biggest mistakes we see our users make is not setting up their homepage. This is what displays when someone visits your domain (for example, or whatever custom domain you’re using on your site). Here’s what your homepage looks like by default:

This acts as a template and should be the foundation on which you build your homepage. Your homepage is often a potential customer’s first impression of your site (and by extension, your courses and your brand), so you don’t want to wait until after launching a course to work on it, or even worse, ignore it completely. You want to wow your users right from the start!

You have a couple options when it comes to your homepage, but first, let’s go over where you can set the page you’ll use as your homepage. Go to Settings, and you’ll be brought to the General Settings page.

Locate the Home Page panel, and click the dropdown menu to select the page you wish to use. By default, this is your Welcome! page, but you can set any page in the Pages section of your site as your homepage. This includes core pages, such as the Login page or your Course Directory.

If you want to make your courses site a members-only site, the Login page is a great option. Keep in mind, though, that your menu tabs do not display on this page, so it will make navigating to other parts of your site (including the Course Directory) difficult. We don’t suggest this option unless you are linking to your Course Directory and/or pricing plans elsewhere (such as your blog, email lists, or Facebook).

Using your Course Directory as your homepage is a great way to quickly get a homepage set up on your site. This page displays all of the courses that you currently have available for purchase, so first time visitors will immediately see all of their options and the kinds of courses that you offer. Your menu tabs display on this page, so returning students can easily log in to their accounts with one click.

Your other option is to edit the Welcome! page or create a new page. To edit the Welcome! page, go to Pages, and locate and click on the Welcome! page. To create a new one, click the Create New Page button.

Pages support text, images, video, audio files, and opt-in forms, so you have a lot of flexibility in how you create your homepage. A simple homepage can be very powerful, so there’s no reason to get too complex here. An image of you or one that represents your courses with a brief introduction or a short video welcoming people to your site is a solid choice.

Alternatively, you might want to consider creating a sales page for one of your courses to use as your homepage. This may suit you if you only offer one course or if you would like to highlight a new course you’re launching.

One last option to consider is placing an opt-in form on this page. Visitors can enter their name and email address into the form, and they’ll be added to any email list you created in your email marketing service and assigned to the opt-in form. This allows you to generate leads and build your community. If this sounds like the direction you’d like to go, check out our support guide on creating an opt-in form to build your email list for more information on the process.

With all of these tools at your disposal, you can create a much more attractive and attention grabbing homepage.

These are your tools for creating a successful homepage, but don’t forget content and tone. If professionalism is important to you, you can create a beautiful, well-designed homepage to instill confidence in your potential customers. If your personality is a big part of your business, this is a great place to introduce your users to it. Because you can quickly and easily change the page which displays as your homepage, feel free to create a few options and try them out to find the perfect fit for your needs!
